Awwwards.com Site of the Day

20120113-093703.jpg

Today is a good day! A bilingual website we created for the Historica-Dominion Institute to commemorate Sir John A. Macdonald’s birthday was selected as site of the day at awwwards.com. As it was just John A’s 197th Birthday this week, this is a great present.

Congratulations as well go to Chris Benotto for helping with Illustration work and Toby Leftly for building the site. And thanks again to Historica-Dominion for having the vision to create such a fun informative site.

A bit about awwwards.com

Rocket Chicken

We introduce the Rocket Chicken and all of his chickeny glory. The Story: Chris, (my employee) and I are always looking for new things to inspire us during our week, sometimes it’s t-shirt design, sometimes it’s just browsing Youtube for funny cat videos, we have found our new creative train, Rocket Chicken. This was an illustration I (Shane) did a few years ago, which consisted of Rocket Chicken standing on what looks like the Moon with the shadow of an alien standing out of view, with the text ” What will become of Rocket Chicken..Find out next week”. We were looking at the illustration a couple weeks ago and Chris and I starting tossing some ideas around, ie. villains, weapons, sidekicks and it’s now blown up into brainstorming about apparel, mobile games and a web comic. It’s lots of fun because we feel there is so much room to expand the story line….however, we don’t want to give away too much right now. Here are a couple preliminary graphics, including the logo. Will post more soon. Check the teaser site out here.

Sir John A. Day

I posted an illustration a few months back of Sir John A. Macdonald (view here) that was the beginning of a much bigger project for the Historica-Dominion Institute to develop an entire campaign. This included a print campaign, (posters, brochures, buttons and t-shirts) as well as a fun scrollable website (in English and French) to help educate Canadians more about their first Prime Minister. Spotvin was hired to create all graphics and site design, including the 1 minute intro Flash animation at the top of the page. This was one of our first projects that really utilized what we do best; illustration, print and web. Have a poke around the site as there is plenty of useful videos and information about Sir John A. including a downloadable party hat. Those are always fun, I’m wearing one right now……you’ll never know.  GO TO SITE

Past Work:Yoga Frog

Sometimes now and again I like to go through my old work (most of it is on my current computer.) I usually have a year shelf life before I start to dislike work from the past but there are a few project that I still enjoy and this is one of them. It was a logo for some yoga series/contraption that was never used, the client never went through with the product, but I’m very happy how it turned out, I can still see it on a t-shirt.

Spotvin Gets Inked

I’ve finally gone and done it. Branded in the true sense of the term…my first tattoo.

I’ve been wanting to get my Windsor ‘momentum rose’ tattooed for some time now and I’m really glad it’s over. It kinda hurt, but it was well worth the pain. If you are looking to represent Windsor too, give Bill a call at Sanctuary, he did a really fantastic job.

The Tourism Cafe

It’s been awhile since I’ve posted, mainly cause we were working on our new swanky online digs, hope you likey. Here is a recent branding project we completed for The Tourism Cafe, a new company which will focus on Product and Marketing Development for the tourism industry. Our goal was to create a logo that looked stylized and “green”, while showing movement in multiple directions, as well, the shape represents a “T” and “C” for the company’s name. Photo below is of their recent business cards.

Spark ED Branding

I had the pleasure to have two passionate, funny and driven women be referred to me for branding work. We had so much fun during the process, meeting in Rino’s Kitchen (The cafe below my office) multiple times over a couple months while the logo was being developed. Their new business is called Spark ED (short for Spark Education) and will be accented learning that will be customized to each child, youth or adult. Really excited to see their business grow, and help them out along the way. A bit about the logo, the little graphic was hand drawn and then polished in Illustrator, The main typeface is a modifie Avenir and the “ED” is custom.
